Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL)
Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL) is the lowest software layer inside AUTOSAR Basic Software. It plays a crucial role in separating hardware-specific details from higher software layers.
MCAL acts as a bridge between the microcontroller hardware and upper layers like the Runtime Environment and Application Layer. This separation improves portability, reusability, and scalability across different microcontroller platforms.
Main Task:
The primary task of MCAL is to make higher software layers independent of the microcontroller (μC). It hides hardware-specific details behind standardized interfaces.
Implementation:
MCAL implementation is microcontroller-dependent. It is designed specifically for the CPU core, flash memory, RAM, timers, ADC, communication peripherals, and interrupt systems of a particular μC.
Upper Interface:
Even though internally hardware-dependent, MCAL exposes a standardized μC-independent interface to upper layers. This ensures portability and easier migration across different hardware platforms.
