Hello Guys, welcome to MAE Learning. In this article, we will see DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code). It is a standard 5-character code generated by the vehicle’s Onboard Diagnostic System (OBD/OBD-II). We will explore how they work and their structure. We’ll also delve into common types and provide real-world examples from the Indian automotive market.
You probably have heard of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) if you have a modern car. People working in the automotive field are also familiar with them. These codes are like a doctor’s report for the car. They quickly communicate to technicians and engineers where the problem is in the car’s system.
Nowadays cars have become very complex. Whether it is a gasoline/petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric vehicle, everyone has to understand DTCs. Understanding DTCs has become an important skill, whether you are a professional or a car owner.
Its purpose is to identify the specific problem of the vehicle (engine, transmission, emissions, etc.).
Each character has a defined structure and meaning which makes it easy to exactly locate and diagnose the problem.
What is a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)?
A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a standard code. It is stored in the vehicle’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) whenever a fault is detected.
You can read these codes with an OBD-II scanner. Alternatively, use advanced diagnostic tools. Some examples include CANoe, DiagRA, or OEM service tools.
Each code indicates a specific problem. It could be with the engine, transmission, ABS, airbags, or another vehicle system. By using these codes, technicians are able to find the issue and fix it easily.
Example:
- P0301 → Engine cylinder 1 misfire detected.
- B0020 → Airbag deployment circuit issue.
Why are DTCs Important?
- Faster diagnosis – DTCs help technicians to directly identify the faulty problem and fix it.
- Reduces guesswork – Instead of trial-and-error repair method, technician/mechanic can directly work on the problem.
- Compliance with rules – Emission-related DTCs are mandatory for OBD-II compliance. This is even more important in India because of BS-VI norms.
- Improves customer satisfaction – When the service is fast and easy with proper result, the customer gets more satisfied.
DTC Code Structure
In below figure you can see the structure of DTC code

Each character represents a different diagnostic layer:

Example DTC Code: P0301
- P → Powertrain (engine, transmission, drivetrain)
- 0 → Generic (applies to all OBD-II compliant cars)
- 3 → Ignition system / Misfire related
- 01 → Misfire detected in Cylinder 1
Categories of DTCs
First Character
- Powertrain-related (P-codes): Engine, transmission, fuel, emissions.
- Chassis-related (C-codes): ABS, steering, traction control.
- Body-related (B-codes): Airbags, central locking, climate control.
- Network-related (U-codes): Communication between ECUs.
Second Character (Standard vs Manufacturer Specific)
- 0 → Standard code (universal/generic across all cars)
- 1 → Manufacturer-specific (OEM custom codes)
- 2 / 3 → Rare cases, reserved for special manufacturer variations
Third Character (Subsystem Identifier)
- Helps identify which subsystem is affected.
- Example for Powertrain (P-codes):
- 1 → Fuel/Air metering
- 2 → Fuel/Air (Injector related)
- 3 → Ignition or misfire
- 7/8 → Transmission
Fourth & Fifth Characters (Specific Fault)
- Define the exact issue like:
- Sensor fault (e.g., O2 sensor, MAF sensor)
- Circuit error (short/open circuit)
- Mechanical malfunction (e.g., misfire in cylinder)
How are DTCs Diagnosed?
- Connect diagnostic tool – Using OBD-II scanner or OEM tool.
- Read codes – View stored and pending DTCs.
- Check freeze frame data – Meaning snapshot of the moment when fault occurred.
- Perform root cause analysis – Find actual problem using service manuals, wiring diagrams, oscilloscope, etc.
- Clear DTC & take test drive – Drive vehicle and check to confirm repair.
Typical Codes and Meanings

Use Case Examples
- Emission Failure in BS-VI Vehicle
DTC: P0420
- Scenario – A BS-VI petrol car failed the PUC test and Diagnostic tool displayed code P0420.
- Root Cause – The catalytic converter had become inefficient. Adulterated fuel had been used in the car for a long time.
- Solution – The catalytic converter had to be replaced.
2. EV Charging Issue
DTC: P0AA6 (Hybrid/EV Isolation Fault)
- Scenario – An Electric car shows charging failure. Diagnostic scan display code P0AA6.
- Root Cause – Insulation resistance of high-voltage system dropped due to moisture ingress.
- Solution – Leakage path identified, system dried and insulation tested.
3. ABS Warning Light
DTC: C0035
- Scenario – A taxi driver reported that the ABS light on the dashboard was on.
- Root Cause – Front wheel speed sensor was damaged due to pothole impact.
- Solution – Wheel speed sensor was replaced.
4. Communication Failure in CAN Network
DTC: U0100
- Scenario – A car owner reported multiple warning lights glowing simultaneously in the vehicle. The Diagnostic tool displayed code U0100.
- Root Cause – CAN wiring was damaged due to rat bites near the engine bay.
- Solution – DTCs were cleared by repairing the harness.
Why DTC Code Structure Matters
- If you understand each digit of a DTC code, you can easily identify:
- Which system is affected (P, B, C, U)
- Whether the code is generic or manufacturer-specific
- Which subsystem is at issue
And what the exact fault or malfunction is
This process is standard for every OBD-II compliant vehicle.
For manufacturer-specific codes (2nd digit = 1, 2, or 3), you must refer to the OEM’s special documentation. You may also contact manufacturer support. These codes are not found in the standard list.
Conclusion
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are basically a language through which your car tells you about its health problems. You can be a car enthusiast, workshop technician, or an automotive engineer. If you understand DTCs, you will be able to understand vehicles better. If you understand DTCs, you will better understand vehicles.
In today’s time, EVs and connected cars are entering the Indian market. The importance of diagnostics and DTCs is going to increase even more.
